“Black History Month is an opportunity for everyone in the United States to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of African Americans in our nation’s history that were for so long silenced by white washing. For instance we’ve all heard of Bond, James Bond, but what about Ellen Bond? Ellen Bond was the cover identity that Mary Bowser adopted while working as a spy during the Civil War. Born a slave, freed and educated, but still working for a respectable family, she was recruited by her mistress to infiltrate the “White House” of the Confederate Army. Due to the racism of the era, black servants were trained to be invisible and assumed to be illiterate giving Bowser ample opporunity to eavesdrop on and read confidential information that she would report back to her abolitionist counterparts. She remained one of the best spies for the union until the final days of the Civil War when suspicion fell on her. She did escape and in doing so, attempted to burn the house!

HSI will be hosting our Celebration of Black History Month onThursday, Feb. 28th at 6pm. Parents and Families are welcome to join for en evening featuring Jazz Band, poetry, speeches, music and dance highlighting and featuring influential African Americans throughout history.

Friday, March 8th is International Women’s Day! We are celebrating the amazing women creating change throughout history and around the world by wearing a pink shirt or a shirt that specifically references prominent women of history and their accomplishments with dress code jeans.
Friday March 8th you can wear a pink shirt, a shirt specifically referencing historically significant women, or an HSI Spirit shirt with dress code jeans.

HSI students will participate in the Fort Worth Regional Science and Engineering Fair at UTA on Monday February 25. We encourage parents to attend the Awards Ceremony at 7 – 8:30 pm. If you plan to be on the UTA campus in your personal vehicle at any time Sunday or Monday, be sure to register your vehicle to avoid a citation. Follow directions here.

Health Notice to Parents

The peak of the cold and flu season is upon us. To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines:

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
  • Headache
  • Mild stomach ache

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (greater than 100 degrees by mouth and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours)
  • Vomiting (even once)
  • Diarrhea
  • Chills
  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
  • Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours. A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 48 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.

Pre-College Summer Programs

Pre-College Summer Programs for Middle&High School Students

Summer programs provide high school students with opportunities to explore their academic interests and spark new passions. They also allow high school students to get a taste of college life and meet other students from all over the world.

A pre-college summer program offers middle & high school students the opportunity to take classes at a college and experience college life during the summer. Most programs range from one to seven weeks long.

You can take programs that focus on a number of diverse subjects, such as writing, leadership, entrepreneurship, and engineering. Many summer programs offer both residential and commuter options. Students can stay in dorms with their peers or commute from home if they live close to campus.

We strongly encourage our students to have this opportunity multiple times until their senior year to taste college atmosphere earlier and help them to build-up a strong resume for their college applications.

Registration for all campuses will begin on Monday, February 25th.

Offered:

This means that your child is offered a seat from the campus.
Starting on Monday, February 25th, you will have 2 business days to accept the placement at a campus.

Accept Placement:

If you accept placement at our campus, you will forfeit placement at all other campuses. You will have 10
business days to complete the registration process which includes: filling out the registration forms and submitting all required
documentation such as proof of residence, transcripts, discipline records, immunizations, and student identification.

Decline Placement:

If you decline placement, you will be removed from that Harmony campus lottery list only.

Wait List:

This means that your child is placed on the wait list for the campus. As students accept/decline spots on the offered
list, your child will move up. If your child moves up to the offered list, the system will send you a message through Smart Choice.

Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Initiative (T-STEM)

Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academies are rigorous secondary schools focusing on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics-related subjects and increasing the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. T-STEM Academies are demonstration schools and learning labs that develop innovative methods to improve science and mathematics instructions.

Prior to the 2011-2012 school year, the only path to become a T-STEM Academy was a T-STEM Academy grant through the Texas Education Agency or one of the private partners in the Texas High School Project.

Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, a second pathway was created. Campuses, using local or other sources of funding, that are implementing the T-STEM Design Blueprint with fidelity may apply to be designated as a T-STEM Academy. T-STEM campuses are designated based on a rigorous designation process. Once a campus is designated, professional development and technical assistance are provided to designated T-STEM academies to serve as demonstration schools and learning labs to showcase innovative instruction methods which integrate technology and engineering into science and mathematics instruction. Designated T-STEM campuses serve students in grades 6-12 or 9-12.

Job Duties:

Prepare appropriate curriculum and annual plan to submit to the administration for approval. Teach science courses to secondary school students; apply the curriculum as prepared and approved; keep attendance records; assign lessons; administer tests to evaluate students’ progress; and maintain discipline in the classroom. Create lesson plans, correct homework, and evaluate teacher-made tests. Prepare tests to evaluate students’ progress, record the results, and issue reports to inform parents of progress. Contact parents to offer positive reinforcement regarding social and academic achievement the students make.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Science Education or any subfield of natural science and 1 year of experience as Science Teacher at middle or high school level. Teaching experience must be full-time as a teacher of record (not substitute) at general education setting (not special population).
